The sports teams in the United States are almost all local. I hadn’t really thought about it, but for the two or three sports we follow mostly – basketball, football (American) and baseball – there’s no important international competition.
Slowly, we are learning to play soccer. But for me, I’m finding it hard to root for the US team – both this Cup and the last. My Spanish professor here in Argentina found this insane. She doesn’t follow soccer, mostly – but when the Seleccion is playing, she’s behind them all the way.
Argentina lost the Cup this year to one of the strongest teams in history, but it was an incredible experience to cheer with a country that lives and dies with its national team, before picking itself up and going on with life.
One of the best things about traveling is getting to celebrate with your host country. Whether you wait until the next World Cup or travel next year, be ready to adopt your host country – the celebration of a country is irresistible.
