Food for thought

Apart from my trip to Monte Alban today, I also saw a part of Oaxaca I had yet to see. My professors at the university here told me that the state of Oaxaca was the second most poor in all of Mexico but I didn’t really see that when I walked to school or around Santo Domingo other than the street venders. But today during the trip to Monte Alban which was a winding road up through the mountains I saw what my professors were talking about. Here in the mountains of Oaxaca are thousands upon thousands of houses staked upon each other. This is were the poverty had been hiding that I had yet to see. Hidden away from the beautiful church of Santo Domingo and the center of the city were Oaxaca’s barrio bajos. At my home university I had read about “people of the mountains” in Mexico but I couldn’t have imagined it the way it really is. For this I only want to post a couple pictures here as for food thought.
