Hola, a todos!
Today was a very exciting day! We had class in the morning and then in the evening we had a celebration at the university for the annexation of Guanacaste, a province in Costa Rica! After classes got over I ran home to eat some lunch, do my homework, and get some make up put on for our presentation at the cultural celebration.
We met back at school at 2:00 so that Maggie could do all of our hair so that we would match.
And while we were getting our hair done, Oso took a nap in the hallway:
After we got our hair all up and matching and some bright red lipstick on, it was time to practice our dance. From about 2:30-3:45 we put together about a three minute long dance to perform at the celebration.
It was so much fun to see everyone that is still here from the previous sessions and the people from my session all together to celebrate this holiday and Costa Rican culture. Some groups performed dances like us while others recited Bombas (a type of poem consisting of four lines with the second and fourth lines rhyming. “Bomba” comes from the word “bombeta” or firecracker and refers to the explosive ending/punchline to the poem) and other performed short skits.
At the celebration there were also some real Tico dancers and singers who were incredible to watch (and put our dancing to shame). After their performances and all of ours they gave us all a little bit of a dance workshop that was fun!
There was also a mechanical bull which was a blast–I stayed on for almost 40 seconds, so not too bad.
Overall it was an incredible evening full of cultural celebration, friends and fun.
I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings,
